David Beckham signs a new contract at Real Madrid... not just for marketing reasons
David Beckham has reportedly put pen-to-paper on a new deal to keep him at Real Madrid until 2009. Spanish media reports quote Real president Ramon Calderon as confirming that Beckham had signed a new contract. Calderon was also keen to point out that the contract extension was based on Beckham's on-field performance.
He said: "Marketing is important but at Real Madrid the most important thing is the sporting factor and the technical (coaching) department gave the green light to renew Beckham's deal." Beckham started Real's first game of the season against Villareal despite reports that he could be frozen out by new coach Fabio Capello. [Via Guardian]
