Zidane wins the Golden Ball. Why?
Zinedine Zidane has 'won' the Golden Ball for player of the tournament. Why? Give him a lifetime achievement award, by all means, but this decision is a disgrace and another embarrassment for FIFA, who clearly couldn't manage a piss-up in a brewery. I understand that the poll was conducted at half-time during yesterday's final, which seems unnecessarily premature.
What sort of message does this send out? Don't worry kids, violent conduct is okay!
FIFA should have gone back to the journalists they polled and asked them to vote again. Surely that would have been easy to do? Zidane had some fine moments, no doubt, but the best player of the tournament was Fabio Cannavaro, who hardly put a foot wrong in seven matches.
PS. The best player of the tournament should have been Argentina's Juan Roman Riquelme, but his manager screwed up the substitutions in the quarter final and the best team in Germany went home early.
